Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learned that art is a great instrument for social activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
